Figure 6 shows how it is implemented.More MP100 can be paralleled in the same wayto get the output power need.Another way to get more output power is usingan external MOSFET to charge the capacitorconnected between VD and GND. Figure 7shows an example. To prevent the thermaldamage of external MOS when VD is shorted toGNDdirectly,PTC(PositiveTemperatureCoefficient) is used which should be placed asclose as to the external MOS to detect thetemperature. When the temperature of externalMOS reaches certain value, the resistor of PTCwill increase sharply to pull down the gatevoltage and shut down the external MOS. Toguarantee its normal start up and steady stateoperation, R3/R2 should be more than 4.5. At thesame time, R3/R2 should not be too high to getbetter thermal protection; generally it should beless than 10. R1 can be used to adjust the switchspeed of external MOS.Line TransformerMP100 can work well when connected to AC lineor programmable AC source. But when using anisolation transformer or a variable transformer assource, because of the high inductance of thetransformer (usually in the mH’s), high voltagespikes occur when MP100 turns off the internalswitch connected between VIN and VB, whichmay damage the IC. An X- capacitor must beinstalled before the rectifier to guarantee thereliability of the system.EMIAn appropriate X-capacitor should be connectedbetween the input ports to guarantee the circuitcan meet EMI requirements.
